The McDonald Family, with deep appreciation and nostalgia, announces the culmination of a 15-year philanthropic journey with the upcoming 2024 Lyle “Chummy” McDonald Memorial Hockey Tournament. This final chapter will serve as a grand celebration of community spirit, hockey passion, and a legacy of support for M&M Thunder youth hockey.
Since its inception, the McDonald Family has proudly sponsored the annual tournament, raising an impressive $28,000 in grants dedicated to empowering aspiring Thunder hockey players. In addition, an endowed fund was established at the M&M Area Community Foundation in 2010. This Fund guarantees a lasting legacy that will continue fostering the growth of youth hockey within the M&M Community for generations to come.
“It has been incredible to honor our father’s legacy through this tournament, a true reflection of his love for hockey,” expressed Alex McDonald. “We are proud of the support we’ve built over the years, creating a lasting source of encouragement for youth hockey.”
While acknowledging the bittersweet decision to conclude the tournament after 2024, the McDonald Family believes it is the right time to gracefully retire from this charitable endeavor. The tournament has left an indelible mark on the local community, offering opportunities and support for countless young athletes.
“As we reflect on the memories created and the significant impact achieved, we extend our deepest thanks to the community for their unwavering support throughout the years,” added Nancy McDonald. “Your contributions have been the driving force behind our ability to make a meaningful difference in youth hockey, and for that, we are truly grateful.”
The McDonald Family invites the community to join them in making this year’s Lyle McDonald Memorial Hockey Tournament a grand finale, celebrating the legacy of support, camaraderie, and the enduring spirit of youth hockey. The tournament will be held March 22nd – 24th at the Community REC Center in Marinette. Player registration fee is $60 and is due no later than March 1.
